Waste Acceptance Criteria: Questions and Answers

Where did the WAC concept arise from?

The EU Landfill Directive which came into force initially on 16 July 2001, set out to raise landfilling standards, to limit and to reduce the quantity and types of waste being landfilled.

The Directive is enforced in the UK by the Landfill Regulations and various statutory instruments.

Since July 2004:-

  • co-disposal of liquid wastes with solid wastes in landfills has been stopped;
  • the landfilling of tyres has been prohibited (except when shredded, until this July)
  • landfill operators have been able to accept only the types of waste for which the sites have been re-classified, and each landfill now falls into one of three classes, either non-hazardous, hazardous, or inert.

Since July 2005: new constraints exists on the amount of organic matter that can be landfilled, and this is particularly stringent for hazardous waste disposal.

Having classified each landfill it is then necessary to identify the wastes which fall into these categories. To solve the problem of deciding which wastes are to go into each of the different types of landfill the concept of the Waste Acceptance Criteria has been developed by the UK Environment Agency.

What are the Waste Acceptance Criteria?

A set of rules by which the waste disposer can establish which category applies to his/her waste.
