Specialisms Within the Skip Services Offered
With the advent of recycling and the WEEE Regulations the services offered by Skip companies have broadened into all aspects of re-use of materials and recycling. One company known as Raven, for example, offers a wide range of services to both commercial (business and office) and domestic customers, but they also specialise in short notice and emergency work from what they describe as; 4 yard skips to 40 yard 'Roll on, Roll off' containers.
Of course, the most common diversification seen is for the contractor to offer a comprehensive waste paper, cardboard and plastics collection and disposal service for businesses in their area. For economies of scale, a specialist waste management contractor with cover a range of districts. An example of the range of districts which might be offered by one contractor or contractor’s branch, would be the bundling of (say) Ebbw Vale, Abergavenny, Cardiff, Newport, and other small South Wales districts into one contract.
Conclusion
With more and more local councils introducing stricter rules on the disposal of municipal waste, and not least the recent requirement that all waste be processed before landfilling, the call for more frequent and wider availability of alternative skip hire options is emerging.
The Skip Hire companies are rising to this challenge and are, as expected of them, starting to introduce new services to cope with the new demands. Permit schemes are now also in place which go in the right direction for avoidance of fly tipping, but the pundits have said that further advance will be hindered here if there continues to be no international standard for this waste management operation in most countries, and speed and prices of necessary permitting continue to vary hugely from council to council.
