In the UK some older landfills have been leaking leachate into local ditches and streams. The solution often adopted is to build a leachate drain around the perimeter, and on the outside of that a vertical plastic lining at the edge of the waste. The leachate collected in the drain is pumped out and treated. In this way pollution is stopped and the wildlife returns.
